It is also complicated, slow, frustrating, and can be quite expensive if you are purchasing all your own glazes.” “The best part of the process,” she adds (very much in the spirit of the Potter to Potter blog series), “is learning and connecting with others.” Watching customers fall in love with her finished pieces is the ultimate reward.</image:caption>

I’ve discussed the technique briefly here. Just have a look at Corey’s pottery gallery, and you can see how their work often centers on animals who are, in the words of the artist themself, “sometimes cute, sometimes mischievous, often unapologetically queer.” If this description appeals to you, give Corey a follow on Instagram!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Potter to Potter: Sgraffito Pottery Process with Proudly Krafted</image:title>
<image:caption>Before beginning the sgraffito process of carving out the traced lines, Corey’s got a pro tip: “Use cornstarch to help bring out traced designs before carving. This makes the imagery easier to read and refine.” Essentially, once a design is traced, to see the design more clearly before carving it out, Corey puts some cornstarch into a sock and gently dabs it onto the piece. The cornstarch makes the tracings easier to see, and therefore easier to carve later on.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Potter to Potter: Sgraffito Pottery Process with Proudly Krafted</image:title>
<image:caption>“Right now, I’m intentionally experimenting and observing how different tools create different marks and textures,” says Corey, “That variation in line quality is a huge part of the process for me. Occasionally, I’ll paint small details back over the carved areas, then clean up and refine the surface before bisque firing.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>If your mold is flat and/or cylindrical (like these mug molds), one of the simplest and most accessible solutions is wrapping your mold in newspaper or newsprint. This thin layer provides just enough separation between the clay and the form, allowing your piece to release easily. Other alternatives are wax paper, parchment paper, and plastic wrap.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If your mold has rounded edges, like a bowl for example, a great option is stretching an old pair of tights or stockings over your mold (what a great way to give those runny pairs of tights another life!). The fabric creates a relatively smooth non-stick surface for your clay.</image:caption>

Initially, I disliked them for mass-producing marks, but I soon saw their creative potential. Using them, I crafted a bottle and cup set that won a Gold Key Scholastic Art & Writing Award—an honor that fueled my pottery journey!</image:caption>

<image:caption>While arts & crafts stencils (like this set of 66 natural designs or this set of wildflower mats or this set of 56 mandalas - see featured image) work well for underglaze or slip painting designs onto clay, when working with slabs, you can also use stencils to imprint subtle designs. Unlike silicone impression mats that tend to press in the design, art stencils will press in the background and make the design pop out.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While my kiln fired a few feet away to keep me warm from the chill of my uninsulated garage, as the song did its sexy R&B and soul thing (iykyk), I kept imagining myself looking suuuuper fine – insert fire emoji here – like all those feisty model throwers on IG and TikTok getting all the likes. Let’s be clear, no one naturally pouts their lips or smiles like Dua Lipa when throwing on the wheel. And I definitely did not look close to any of those one-chili-pepper level of spice videos (I’m a proud goofball), but I was feeling lovely and loved, and isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is all about?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Potters use their bodies in repetitive and often physically demanding ways, which can lead to muscle tension and strain. If you have the skills (because a bad massage is a terrible gift, sorry), grab a favorite massage oil (like this set from Hayberwood LLC on Etsy) and give your potter a solid hour long full-body massage. Areas to target: Hands and fingers, wrists and forearms, shoulders and upper back, lower back (this is a primo location to focus on if they are wheel-throwers), neck, hips, legs, and feet.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An inspiration jar is a cute gesture to help spark creativity when your potter’s in the studio. Grab a recycled glass jar, some paper strips, and a pen. Write inspiring pottery-related quotes, maker prompts, or sketch ideas on each paper strip, fold them up, and fill the jar. I’ve put together some pottery project ideas you can print and cut out here if you need some help! I recommend sprinkling in some love notes in there, too! Scroll to the end for some flirty pottery related ones you can use if you are feeling punny. Of course, feel free to decorate the jar (I know I can’t resist a little glue gun magic moment).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 6 Valentine's Day Gifts for Potters & Pottery Students: Thoughtful Ideas from DIY to Small Business Finds - 5) A Journal or Notebook</image:title>
<image:caption>While potters mainly work with clay, a journal or notebook can come in rather handy for note-taking on glaze choices, writing “to make” lists, and sketching current and future ideas. The Pottery Journal is a go-to for potters to keep track of their ideas, projects, processes, and products. Whether your loved one is a hobbyist or a full-time ceramic artist, this thoughtfully crafted journal helps you track, reflect, and refine your process so you can grow your craft with confidence. France-based Season Paper journals have lined, blank, and grid pages. Some also have Valentine’s Day appropriate names like “Amore Mio” and “Romance.” For sustainable options, check out USA-based Decomposition Notebooks or Sweden-based Agood Company Notebooks (the paper is made from stone without deforestation, water waste, or harmful chemicals and it is smooth, waterproof, and tear-resistant, plus, they plant a tree with every sale!).</image:caption>

<image:caption>How about something that smells nice and smoothes out those post-pottery time dry hands? One of my small biz favorites is the Rose & Pink Salt Scrub from Massachusetts-based KT Creative Goods on Etsy. It exfoliates beautifully and smells like a dream – and roses are for everyone! If you want to look at some bigger businesses, another romantic option is the Verbena, Lavender, & Rose gift set from Panier des Sens en Provençe (which you can also find on Amazon in Orange Blosson, Jasmine, and Geranium). More of a practical romantic? Go for O’Keefe’s Working Hands and a simple pair of cotton gloves to seal the moisture in at night.</image:caption>

Without you, I’d just be reclaim.” "You’re the handle to my mug—perfectly made for me." “My eyes never glaze over with you.” “I’d carve out time for you any day.” "You’re un-bowl-ievably sexy.” “Pinch me like one of your pots.” "You’re so hot, you could turn clay into bisqueware." “Shall we slip and score?” "Let’s turn up the heat—this kiln’s ready for action." “I’d cone up for you.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mugs (like this one) were by far the most popular purchase, with my mugs priced between $25-$65 a piece. My most popular mug by far was my porcelain happy Muggie Mug, who has his own comic by the way! You are welcome to share it with people curious to learn how a wheel-thrown mug is made! If you want to know how and why I price my mugs the way I do, check out this blog post: How Much Does a Handmade Ceramic Mug Cost and Why? Did you know? According to Verified Market Research, “Coffee Mugs Market size was valued at USD 7.4 Billion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 9.5 Billion by 2030”!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Pottery Studio Behind the Scenes: Top 5 Pottery Items Purchased in 2024 - #2 - Vases</image:title>
<image:caption>Vases make great gifts and beautiful statement pieces for any home, whether tiny ($20-$45) or large ($200-$350). My vases are canvases for my artistic expression, showcasing intricate designs and motifs that reflect my values and aesthetics as a creative (which I discuss here). When it comes to gift-giving, unlike mugs, which come with questions about handle feel or size preferences, vases are a lower-stress choice. Plus, you can make the gift extra special by adding fresh-cut flowers!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Pottery Studio Behind the Scenes: Top 5 Pottery Items Purchased in 2024 - #3 - Ring Holders</image:title>
<image:caption>My small lucky elephant ring holders were a hit this year (see them here!). I started out making them in blue, but then started to make them in pink, green, and other colors. I attribute their success to 1. cuteness, 2. transportable size, 3. fuctionality, and 4. lower price point. I can price my little elephants lower ($15-$20 depending on size) because they require less effort, materials, and kiln space. You can get a mass manufactured one from Amazon for $13.99 or a one of a kind handmade one? I vote for the more sustainable small-business friendly option!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Pottery Studio Behind the Scenes: Top 5 Pottery Items Purchased in 2024 - #4 - Cups / Planters</image:title>
<image:caption>The cup has been a fundamental vessel throughout human history. Early cups, such as those made by the Egyptians and Mesopotamians, were often crafted from clay and served both practical and ceremonial purposes. Over time, the cup been made of many other materials, but the clay cup does remain! The nice part about a glazed ceramic cup is that it is wonderfully versatile. It can be used for drinking, for dipping paintbrushes, for storing pens and pencils, or as a planter for an adorable succulent! The versatility of the cup and the medium range price point ($35-$60) appears to appeal to buyers who want a piece of ceramic art that can also serve many purposes in the home.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE throwing large bowls on the wheel. I love the challenge and the feeling of overcoming that challenge. I also love how a large bowl gives me a large surface to decorate. In terms of purchasing habits, people shopping Meesh Pottery liked larger serving bowls. My theory is that they like that larger bowls are functional statement art pieces for dinner parties and beautiful ornamental pieces for the kitchen counter.</image:caption>

I’ve experimented with blending slip trailing and other techniques like carving and stamping, and it’s always exciting to see how the textures interact.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Choosing an Electric Kiln for Your Home Pottery Studio - Spacial tips for installing an electric kiln at home:</image:title>
<image:caption>Ensure the room has proper ventilation to the exterior via a window, ceiling, or floor. I vent my kiln through a small garage window using the Skutt EnviroVent 2. Ensure your kiln has breathing room. Kilns should be at least 18” from noncombustible walls (ex. concrete, brick), 3’ from combustible walls (ex. wood), and placed on noncombustible flooring. Keep kilns away from flammable materials. A student once shared that a sewing project left on a kiln caused their school's art wing to burn down—always take precautions! The room must handle heat well. In a poorly ventilated kiln room at a school I taught at, high summer temps caused the kiln panel to overheat, triggering an error code. Installing a fan to cool the panel solved the issue. Place the kiln near the electrical receptacle, as most have 6 ft cords. Longer cords reduce efficiency.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Based on my notes for 2024, I did a total of 25 firings. 1 Cone 019 luster firing, 4 preheats, 9 Cone 04 bisque firings, and 11 Cone 6 glaze firings. The number of kiln firings went up in the fall to prepare for winter markets. It was low in the summer because I was away. Total electric costs for all my firings in 2024 amounted to about $300, with an average of $14.50 per bisque/glaze firing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Allow me to set the scene. The high-ceilinged hall buzzes with activity, filled with art vendors and the hum of conversation. On a table, a wooden rack shows off rows of some of my mugs and cups. A purple scarf wearing individual approaches and exclaims with surprise, “oh wow, look, a mug with no handle!”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 6 Ways to Make Pottery Handles: Expert Tips and Handle-Making Wisdom - Technique #1 - Extruded Clay Handle</image:title>
<image:caption>If you have access to a hand-held extruder (like the one pictured above from Shimpo), you can make consistently sized handles by extruding them with your chosen die shape. What’s nice about the hand-held extruder, is that is is also wonderful for making consistent coils for coil-handles and coil-building. Want to create your own die shape? If you have access to a 3D printer, you can make your own! Use Tip! —> While this is an efficient way to make a lot of consistently shaped handles, make sure to budget time for cleaning the tool out after use. Additional resources: Check out this 6.5 minute video by Old Forge Creations on how to extrude a handle. This post from Pottery Crafters goes into further detail on how to use a handheld extruder to make handles and includes videos.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 6 Ways to Make Pottery Handles: Expert Tips and Handle-Making Wisdom - Technique #2 - Hand-rolled Coil Handle</image:title>
<image:caption>Coiling is a standard pottery technique (often adored by littles — so many snakes!). You can create a coil with a hand-held extruder, or roll it by hand. To roll a good coil, apply even pressure while moving back and forth from palm to finger tips. Your coil could be uniform with consistent thickness, or carrot shaped. That’s up to you! I like to make carrot shaped coils and then slam them down onto a non-sticky table surface to flatten them out a bit. You can also take coiled handles to the next decorative level by twisting two strands, braiding three strands, etc.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 6 Ways to Make Pottery Handles: Expert Tips and Handle-Making Wisdom - Technique #3 - Slab Built Clay Handle</image:title>
<image:caption>Want consistent thickness for your handles and to make them in efficient batches? Consider slab building them. First, I will roll out a large slab. Since I have a smaller home studio, I use this slab roller for most slabs, but I’ve also rolled them by hand with a wooden rolling pin between 2 square wooden dowels from Home Depot to get consistent hight. For larger functional mugs I don’t really recommend handles thinner than 1/4”. My preferred handle thicknesses for mugs are 3/8” and 1/2”. Then, I will cut out my handles in the desire width and length using a fettling knife (which comes in the basic Kemper Toolkit). My go to handle width and length is 6” x 0.75” — which are the measurements of an adult tongue depressor (ask for a couple at your next Dr. visit! No need to buy a whole box). I just use the tongue depressor as my cut out guide and I can make many handles at once. Once the handles are cut, I will take a small damp smooth textured sponge and smooth out the edges to soften them and round them out because, well, sharp edges aren’t fun to hold on to. You can also imprint the handle with texture using a textured rolling pin (how cute is this leaves one from Blick.com?) or stamps (like these seashells for a beach-themed piece!).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 6 Ways to Make Pottery Handles: Expert Tips and Handle-Making Wisdom - Technique #4 - Extruded with a Clay Handle Maker</image:title>
<image:caption>Another way to get consistent handles is with a handle maker (also sometimes called a handheld clay extruder, not to be confused with this hand-held clay extruder discussed in technique #1). Diamond Core Tools (which I write about in my review of trimming & carving tools) makes a series of handheld extruders ($52) with various handle designs, from concave shapes (left tool in image above) to u-shaped, and grooved. Diamond Core has a whole article on what handheld extruders are and how to use them. New shoppers to Diamond Core Tools can use code WELCOME25 at checkout directly through the website for a 25% off discount. Want to get a set of hand-held extruders from Blick.com? They price match! Looking for a more budget option? Kemper makes a simple one ($9.07, middle tool in image above) and there are these Therwen brand ones on Amazon ($17.99).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 6 Ways to Make Pottery Handles: Expert Tips and Handle-Making Wisdom - Technique #5 - Folded Clay Handle</image:title>
<image:caption>This technique is fun if you like wrap-around texture on your handle. How to make a folded handle, step by step: Roll out a thin slab (about 1/8” thick) so that it’s about 1/4” when folded. Optional: Add texture to one surface. On the picture above, I used a rolling pin from MKM Pottery Tools (similar to this one), which I discuss here. Cut out the slab to the desired length and double the desired width of the handle. Score and slip the non-textured side of the handle then fold over each long edge of the slab into the center of the slab. Make sure the edges meet or overlap a little bit at the center (notice the seam on the photograph below). Press gently to allow the slip to move into the scratched surfaces.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 6 Ways to Make Pottery Handles: Expert Tips and Handle-Making Wisdom - Technique #6 - Pulled Clay Handle</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve never milked a cow, but I imagine it’s very similar to pulling handles? Pulling handles involves shaping a piece of clay into a long, tapered form using water and consistent hand pressure. A handle can be pulled off the side of a piece or it can be pulled and then attached to a piece. Check out this video by Florian Gadsby on Youtube to learn how (the whole video is great, but if you just want to see the handle pulling, you can stop at 5:30). Because handle-pulling is responsive (you have to adjust your pressure to the shape the clay the way you want), pulling handles takes patience and practice. While pulling handles may feel a bit intimidating, it’s a technique worth trying.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 6 Ways to Make Pottery Handles: Expert Tips and Handle-Making Wisdom - Method #1 - Using Forms to Create Pottery Handles</image:title>
<image:caption>If you want your handles to have a consistent shape, you can use forms. Forms can be scavenged: paper towel tubes, a 2x4 plank of wood, a canvas-covered water bottle. Forms can be made: shaped and fired bisque-ware, carved foam, specialty cut wood blocks. Forms can be bought: check out this 12 piece set from Amazon for $8.99! The long rectangle form and the large classic-curve shaped form (both pictured) are my personal go-tos.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 6 Ways to Make Pottery Handles: Expert Tips and Handle-Making Wisdom - Method #2 - Making Free Form Pottery Handles</image:title>
<image:caption>This one is more self explanatory. Before attaching, you can shape the handle on its side on a table or hanging off a table edge, or you can shape the handle right onto the piece. While the clay is malleable, you can play around with the shape. Look at the handle from all angles and find the look that works best for your piece.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Scratch & attach the handle to the wall of your piece and blend the part of the handle angling down. While the sides and top of the handle don’t need a full blend in this method, I recommend taking a slightly damp smooth paintbrush and going around the seems to seal them shut. We don’t want any cracks to appear.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Prep the handle by widening out the ends (either pinching them or pushing them onto a flat surface to spread them out) to create fine bell-bottom shaped edges that can then be blended onto the surface of the piece. <image:caption>This method relies on a good scratch and attach, and a good amount of pressure at the join. The handle should have a good amount of surface area attached to the piece, like the nub featured at the top of this diagram, or the L shape featured at the bottom. The added bonus of the L shape, is that you can also add extra pressure at the join by imprinting a small stamp (like this wooden stamp from MKM pottery tools). Some potters will imprint their signature stamp (which I discuss here) at the bottom join of a handle.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Start Collecting Handmade Pottery: A Millennial’s Guide to Finding the Perfect Pieces - 1) Know Thyself: Reflect on Your Personal Style</image:title>
<image:caption>Building a collection of handmade pottery is a meaningful way to express your personality and create a space that feels uniquely yours. Unlike mass-produced items, each piece tells a story—whether it’s a mug with a quirky handle, a bowl in a bold glaze, or a vase with intricate texture. By curating a collection that resonates with you, your space becomes a reflection of you! So before you embark on building your pottery collection, take a moment to reflect on your personal style. Are you a minimalist who loves clean lines and neutral tones, or are you more drawn to vibrant colors and whimsical shapes? If the latter, I invite you to check out my gallery! Knowing your aesthetic will make your handmade pottery acquisition journey a whole lot easier. If sustainability is also something you value, buying pottery from local artisans reduces carbon footprints compared to mass-produced items. Home studios may also adopt more sustainable practices, like I do!</image:caption>

Not only will you find unique pieces that you won't see anywhere else, but you'll also be supporting an artist – win-win! You can learn about where I sell my artwork in person throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire on my Vendors/Events page.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Start Collecting Handmade Pottery: A Millennial’s Guide to Finding the Perfect Pieces - 3) The Art of Touch: Finding Pottery That Speaks to You</image:title>
<image:caption>When you're on the prowl for handmade pottery, don't be afraid to get tactile (I always invite people to touch my art!). Run your fingers over the surface, feel the texture, weight it, try out that handle for fit and comfort, and imagine how it would look sitting on your shelf or adorning your dining table. When shopping for handmade pottery, consider craftsmanship, glaze quality, and whether the piece suits your needs. In the end, trust your gut – if it speaks to you, snag it! If it’s a piece of pottery like any of my pieces, it’s likely the only one of it's kind!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Start Collecting Handmade Pottery: A Millennial’s Guide to Finding the Perfect Pieces - 4) Eclectic Charm: Mixing and Matching Pottery Works</image:title>
<image:caption>When you are building your collection, don't feel like you have to stick to one style or theme. Mixing and matching different pottery pieces can add depth and personality to your collection. Who says your mug has to match your plate anyway? Embrace the eclectic! You should check out my kitchen cabinets! Also, learning the story behind each uniquely handmade pottery piece creates a deeper, more personal connection than simply buying something (or multiple similar somethings) off a shelf. Meeting the artist or hearing about their process transforms the object into a piece rich with story. If you every want to learn the story about one of my pieces, just ask!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Start Collecting Handmade Pottery: A Millennial’s Guide to Finding the Perfect Pieces - 5) Affordable Art: Budget-Friendly Ways to Collect Handmade Pottery:</image:title>
<image:caption>While shopping for handmade pottery, you may find that pieces are priced higher than what you would find in a store like Ikea or Target. That’s perfectly normal. If you want to better understand how and why handmade pottery is priced the way it is, check out this blog post. While it is important to recognize the value of the art you are purchasing, collecting handmade artisan pottery doesn't necessarily have to be very costly. Firstly: You can explore local thrift stores and yard sales for secondhand pottery. Secondly: You can check if artisans sell “seconds” at a discount. Seconds are pieces with minor imperfections that don’t impact their functionality. I usually have a seconds table or bin when I am at farmer’s markets because people attending farmer’s markets don’t have the same shopping intention as people attending art festivals, and they are more likely to purchase budget finds. Thirdly: You can keep an eye out for smaller pieces like spoon rests ($15-$20), ring holders ($18-$40) and miniature vases ($20-$25) that are within your range. *These are my prices. Plus, you'll have the satisfaction of slowly building your collection over time!</image:caption>

You can even make your pottery glow in the dark by using glow in the dark glitter!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Make a Large Wavy Ceramic Bowl: Step-by-Step Pottery Tutorial - Step 1: Prepare for the Bowls to Drape</image:title>
<image:caption>Before I begin throwing an extra large bowl on a large 12” or wider round bat (like this one), I rig one thin but sturdy plank of wood (I have some recycled flooring planks) across two level and steady surfaces (I use stools in the studio), and I have another plank ready nearby.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/658e2470ab16e223d243be7d/ff57ee7b-8ef9-40f4-8e70-9aa028d05059/May_5448.JPG</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - How to Make a Large Wavy Ceramic Bowl: Step-by-Step Pottery Tutorial - Step 2: Throw the Bowl & Flip It</image:title>
<image:caption>Every large wavy bowl starts with control. With wrestling 7-10lbs of clay into symmetry and balance. It’s a dance of pushing and pulling. It’s not easy making the “perfect” (if one is to believe symmetry is perfection) large bowl on the pottery wheel. It is much easier taking that symmetry and making it human — and that’s the part I like most. Humanizing my bowl involves taking that extra large symmetrical piece, still stuck to the large round bat it’s been thrown on, holding my breath, and flipping it upside down. When I exhale, it’s a letting go. I then shake the piece gently from side to side and let gravity do the rest — I cannot control the undulations, the way the balanced clay walls choose to bend and sway the way bodies do.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/658e2470ab16e223d243be7d/1704655183536-990VTQSKD1EL9A24ZCOZ/IMG_1228.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - How to Make a Large Wavy Ceramic Bowl: Step-by-Step Pottery Tutorial - Step 3: Let the Bowl Hang Upside Down</image:title>
<image:caption>The trick after that is letting the piece hold its shape in the drying process. Because if I were to flip the piece back up, the walls might fall altogether. After the bowl is flipped, I place one edge of the bat on one plank, then, holding onto the piece with one hand, I slide the other plank parallel to the other to suspend the piece from the bat. I usually leave it upside down like this overnight, just enough time for the walls to become leather hard and keep their shape once I flip the piece back around for wiring off and trimming.</image:caption>
